Purpose
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) recognizes middle school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Character, Citizenship, Leadership, and Service. Membership in NJHS is both an honor and an ongoing responsibility.

Eligibility
To be considered for NJHS membership, students must:

  • Be enrolled in eligible grade levels as defined by the chapter
  • Have attended the school for the equivalent of one semester
  • Meet the scholarship eligibility requirement

Meeting the scholarship requirement establishes eligibility only and does not guarantee selection.

Scholarship Requirement
Because our middle school does not calculate GPA, the Faculty Council uses cumulative semester letter grades as an equivalent standard of scholarship, in alignment with NJHS national guidelines. Students who earned A Honor Roll or A/B Honor Roll based on cumulative semester grades are considered to have met the scholarship requirement and are invited to participate in the NJHS selection process. Once the scholarship criterion is met, academic performance is not re-evaluated or ranked during the selection process.

Invitation to Participate
Students who meet the scholarship requirement receive an invitation to provide information for consideration by the Faculty Council.Submission of information and meeting academic eligibility do not guarantee membership.

Selection Process
NJHS membership is granted through a faculty-led selection process.

1. Faculty Council Review
A Faculty Council composed of five appointed faculty members reviews all eligible candidates. The process is conducted confidentially and objectively.

2. Evaluation Criteria

3. Candidates are evaluated on the following NJHS core principles:

  • Character: Demonstrates honesty, responsibility, respect, and consistent adherence to school expectations.
  • Citizenship: Shows respect for school rules, peers, staff, and the learning environment; contributes positively to the school community.
  • Leadership: Takes initiative, influences others positively, and demonstrates responsibility in school or community settings.
  • Service: Demonstrates a willingness to help others and contribute through service-oriented actions or activities.

4. Decision Making
All candidates are discussed thoroughly. Selection is determined by a majority vote of the Faculty Council. Individual deliberations and voting results remain confidential.

Timeline
The official NJHS selection meeting will take place on January 6. Results will be announced after the selection process has been fully completed.

Notification
Families and students will be notified of the results following the conclusion of the selection process. Students who are not selected may be eligible for consideration in future years if they continue to meet eligibility requirements.

Membership Expectations
NJHS membership is an ongoing commitment. Selected members are expected to:

  • Maintain academic standards
  • Demonstrate positive behavior and citizenship
  • Participate in NJHS meetings and service activities
  • Uphold the values and principles of NJHS

Failure to meet expectations may result in probation or dismissal in accordance with NJHS guidelines.

Equity & Confidentiality
The NJHS selection process is conducted fairly, consistently, and without discrimination. Faculty Council discussions remain confidential to protect the integrity of the process.
