Monday October 02, 2017 a”Mock” Testing will be conducted for all 8th-11th graders. Wednesday, October 11, HSA will be administrating College Board Readistep & PSAT / NMSQT Testing for our 8th- 11th graders. The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The PSAT/NMSQT measures: critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills, and writing skills. The PSAT assesses vital skills necessary for college. Juniors taking the PSAT test enter competitions for the National Merit Scholarship as well as the National Hispanic Recognition Program based on their PSAT scores. The National Merit Scholarship and National Hispanic Recognition Programs are some of the most sought after awards in the country. In addition to the assessment tool PSAT testing provides students the opportunity to practice for the SAT exam. Science Fair Night

Dear Harmony Family, We will be hosting a parent information night for the upcoming Science Fair on Monday October 4, 2017 at 5:30 pm in the cafeteria. The information night will be open to all parents and students who wish to attend. Students have been given a Science Fair Booklet during class with more detailed instructions and expectations. Hispanic Heritage Month

Students at HSASA have been celebrating the Hispanic Heritage Month. This celebration, started in 1968 as our nation recognized Hispanic citizen’s contributions to the growth of our country in important areas such as science, education, government, business, art or sports. Our students have learning and presenting to our School Body not only Hispanics’ efforts like Professor Enrique Cardenas, athlete Manu Ginobili or Major Julian Castro to name some, but also learning about the history of independence of those influential Hispanic’ roots countries such as Guatemala, Venezuela, Argentina, Costa Rica, Mexico, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, etc.

Constitution Week!!!

1. Monday: Constitution Facts announcement, invite DEAR classes to participate in Door Decorating contest (winners will get a prize!) 2. Tuesday: Loyalist or Patriot? Students will be asked to “sign” the Declaration of Independence BEFORE entering the building. Patriots will sign and enter first, Loyalist will be go to the back of the line. 3. Wednesday: Scavenger Hunt: A school-wide hunt for the Bill of Rights, first ten to finish will win a prize! 4.Thursday: Presentation from St. Mary’s University for Juniors and Seniors. 5. Friday: Dress like a Patriot! (Free dress costs will go to Hurricane Relief Funds!) $3.00 Pay at Front office. Each day we will have a special announcement, we will have posters and signs throughout the building. All Contest winners will be announced on Friday morning.

MAP Testing

HSA-SA will start MAP testing for students in 6th -10th grade on Monday, September 18th, 2017. MAPNWEA is a nationally recognized test that helps us to determine your child’s instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year and from year to year in the areas of Reading, Language, and Math. There are no passing or failing score for MAP tests. Instead, Harmony uses MAP scores to find out what students know, and what they need to know. The goal of testing students in MAP is to find out where students need help the most. MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. Additionally with MAP tests, we can administer shorter tests and use less class time while still receiving detailed, accurate information about your child’s growth. Following each testing period, you will receive a report showing your child’s growth. We do want students to do their best on MAP and try their best. We will test the students again in February of 2018, where we would like to see how much the students have learned and grown. Then we will use the MAP data again to help students where they need help the most. There is no need for students to ‘study’ for MAP tests, but the guidelines in this link are great tools for parents to help students at home.

Parent Info Night For CRLP Members 5:30 PM Wednesday Sept. 27, 2017 Large Cafeteria WHAT IS CRLP PLUS? The college readiness and leadership program plus (CRLP) is a voluntary mentorship program designed to help qualified students improve their skills in: *Social Networking *Academics *Extracurricular Activities *Personal Development We believe that students within a collaborative and cooperative environment will excel at academics while reaching their full intellectual, mental, physical and emotional potential. CRLP plus is a committed long term interactive mentor-mentee relationship which will enhance the student’s probability of acceptance into top ranking colleges and universities around the Nation. In this program we offer the students: 1. Weekly programs (Club or Academic studies, Congressional Awards tracking, College Research project, School grades tracking). 2. Camps & Overnight programs: Camps are one of the mandatory activities in CRLP plus program and also a good opportunity to socialize and improve leadership skills with peers together. A CRLP plus student has to attend all the camps and other overnight programs and benefit from them academically and socially. For details see 3. Summer Leadership Camps: A wonderful final for the end of the year. At the beginning of June, students will stay with more than 100 friends in the camp area. Stem activities, SAT Course, leadership talks and lots of recreational activities. 4. College trips: We want the CRLP plus students to see the real college life by visiting the best colleges & universities in the USA. They also come together with the current students or grads to receive information about those colleges. For details see 5. International trips: This is the most exciting and once in a life activity in the Harmony Schools. These trips and camps are optional and require additional payments. So far, as a part of these activities we visited a lot of different Europe cities. You will get more information from the CRLP coordinator as the arrangements are done. For details see 6. Home visits and parent & student invitations: We believe that one of the most important component of a successful education life is to establish strong communication between teachers, parents and students. For this reason we will visit you at your home if you are available, otherwise we will invite you to share information about the student’s progress. Fun days and award ceremonies: In order to make the CRLP plus program more colorful, we will go to different activities like bowling, soccer, laser tag, picnics, etc. We will also come together with parents and students in CRLP plus award ceremonies. Congratulations for 2017 State Accountability Result!

Harmony Science Academy-San Antonio earned five distinction designations from Texas Education Agency (TEA) for the 2016-17 school year. Thank you to all the teachers, staff for this significant accomplishment, and thank you to all parents for continued support of child’s education. Free School Meals for All Students

Due to the impact of Hurricane Harvey on the families of Houston, the Texas Department of Agriculture is allowing school districts located in counties declared a disaster area to serve ALL students (regardless of eligibility) a free breakfast and lunch until September 30th, 2017. Our school will be participating in this initiative, so we are pleased to provide your children a free breakfast and lunch thus allowing parents to focus on their recovery process.

If you have been displaced as a result of the hurricane or resulting flooding, please contact the school Lunch Clerk. Your child may qualify for free meals for the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year if he or she meets the state requirements. Should you have questions or need additional information; please contact your child’s school.

In accordance with the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented students, Harmony Public Schools will begin taking nominations for kindergarten and newly-enrolled students in grades 1-12 for gifted and talented screening. Effective September 1, 2017, anyone interested in the educational welfare of these students may nominate them for assessment.

Nomination forms are available at the front office and on the school’s web site. The forms must be returned to the front office by Friday, September 29, 2017. Assessment will begin on Monday, October 2, 2017. For more information about the screening and identification process, parents may contact the school’s GT Coach/teacher.

PS: Due to Hurricane Harvey, all Houston campuses will be accepting nominations until October 11th.

Our teachers are working hard, going beyond their schedule and trying to visit our parents in their homes. The goal of home visits is first of all to get parent feedback and ask about any concerns. Also to have a better communication and increase parent involvement in their child’s education… This way build rapport and respect between the student, parent and the teacher which improves students’ grades and behavior at school. Time for Chromebooks!!

It is time to start getting the Chromebooks handed out. All students will need to fill out the Chromebook paperwork, which is available in the office, with parent and student signatures. All fees for insurance, any fees from last year, due to missing keys and chargers, must be paid in full before student receives their device. If you are new to Harmony this year, you must attend a Mandatory Chromebook Orientation to complete the process for your child to receive the Chromebook. We are having our next Parent Orientation this Tuesday,Sept. 12, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. in the small Cafeteria. We do have chromebook covers for sale in the front office for $10, if you wish to purchase one.
