Dear parents,

If your child is taking one or more Advanced Placement (AP) courses at Harmony! As you may know, there are several benefits of taking AP courses;

  • Stand Out in College Admissions

Deciding to take an AP course lets colleges and universities know that you have what it takes to succeed in an undergraduate environment. When admissions officers see “AP” on your transcript, they know that what you experienced in a particular class has prepared you well for the challenges of college.

  • Earn College Credits

By taking an AP course and scoring successfully on the related AP Exam, you can save on college expenses: most colleges and universities nationwide offer college credit, advanced placement, or both, for qualifying AP Exam scores.

  • Skip Introductory Classes

If you already know your preferred college major, taking a related AP course and earning a qualifying score on the AP Exam can help you advance and avoid required introductory courses – so you can move directly into upper-level classes and focus on the work that interests you most.

  • Build College Skills

Taking an AP course builds the skills you’ll need throughout your college years. You give your mind a rigorous workout while polishing up your time management and study skills. You also get better at handling challenging issues and problems, with the support of your AP teachers.

Students have been studying hard and getting ready to AP Exams, which are going to allow them earn college credit! We encourage all AP students to sign up and fulfill their time by studying for their exams. 2018 AP Exam calendar is attached.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   With our best wishes, College and Career Counseling Department – HSA-SA

Confluence is a youth water conference that attracts 1,000 students citywide and is the capstone event for IMPACT, a project based learning program hosted by San Antonio Water System. The projects our IMPACT Teams showcased this year for the summit include the following:

The “Zoo Crew” worked with Bob Waterman at the San Antonio Zoo to install a drip irrigation system in two gardens at the zoo. This not only reduced the amount of water the zoo uses, but it also reduced the amount of man hours it took to hand water these areas.

The A&M Team worked with Dr. Valdez at Texas A&M University San Antonio. These students were hoping to use microbes to help native plants grow at the Riverwalk and crowd out the invasive Bermuda grass that is currently there. However, due to an early freeze and snow, the group had to move their project indoors. The students were great at changing their project to adapt to the unusual San Antonio weather, and in the end their results were exactly what they hoped they would be.

The third Impact Team worked with Elequa. They have created a device that will hold an LED light and a sensor around an electrocoagulation prototype. They then reprogrammed the device to work as an opacity sensor, which takes readings of the water as it cleans.
